Sun Protection and MeladermIf you are looking to lighten your skin then it makes sense to limit your exposure to the sun’s rays by covering up and using a good sunscreen.

I’m not suggesting we avoid the sun all together because sunlight does play a vital role in the production of Vitamin D in the body. Vitamin D is needed for cell growth and repair and it is essential for maintaining healthy bones.

However when you use skin lightening products your skin can become more “photosensitive”. While the production of brown pigmentation (melanin) is the skin’s natural protection sun damage, skin that is photosensitive may show an increase in pigmentation beyond what is considered normal.

When using skin whiteners it is recommended that you wear a good broad spectrum sunscreen.

A good sunscreen should not react with Meladerm but is it recommended that you apply Meladerm to your skin first, then wait 10 minutes at least, before putting your makeup or sunscreen on. This allows the lightening cream to be fully absorbed into the skin first.

When choosing a sunscreen make sure you pick a lotion that blocks both the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation there are 3 types of UV rays in ultraviolet radiation from the sun. These are UVA, UVB and UVC rays.

While UVC rays are not considered dangerous, the UVA and UVB rays are responsible for the tanning and photo-aging of the skin.

  • UVA rays are less intense than UVB rays but they are the most prevalent and penetrate the skin more deeply than UVB rays. They are known to cause skin damage including the ageing and wrinkling of the skin.
  • UVB ray are more intense, causing sunburn and skin reddening. They tend to damage the upper epidermal layers of the skin and are responsible for most skin cancers.

Sunscreens For Skin Lightening – Tips

Neutrogena SPF 85 SuncreenChoose a sunscreen with a higher SPF (Sun Protection Factor) to get maximum protection. Neutrogena make a broad spectrum sunscreen called Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock which can be purchased with high protection factors like SPF of 85 or SPF  100 that block both both rays.

Kiss My Face SunscreenWhen choosing a sunscreen, look for ingredients like Avobenzone (or trade name Parsol 1789) at least 3%, Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, or Mexoryl-Sx.

If you like to use natural sunscreens you can try Kiss My Face Face Sunscreen SPF 50 that is suitable for face and neck.

Civant Skin Care SPF 35 SuncreenThe makers of Meladerm Whitening Cream, Civant Skincare, also make a SPF 35 sunblock that is non-greasy and doesn’t block pores. It is a perfect sunscreen for dark skin and does not leave a white residue.

It offers broad spectrum protection from UVA & UVB rays, suits all skin types and tones and is paraben free.

Hi. Civant skincare make a number of products but not a body lotion as such. However Meladerm cream can be used on all parts of the body to lighten areas like dark underarms or elbows.
