Meladerm Side EffectsIf you have been searching for a safer skin whitening cream, you are not alone! Skin whitening creams have become extremely popular in recent years as people look for ways to improve the overall appearance of their skin and address their skin pigmentation problems. As with any skin care product, care should be taken when buying a whitening cream, to avoid the risk of irritating your skin or choosing a product that is not suitable for your skin type.

Evidence suggests that ingredients used in the past for skin lightening may now carry a risk of cancer, liver or kidney damage and even poisoning. Skin whitening creams containing hydroquinone or mercury should therefore be avoided.

Luckily today there are a range of skin whitening creams that are made from natural and organic components which work in the same way as these chemical lighteners but they are much kinder to your skin and better for your overall health. Natural skin lighteners are usually suited to a wider range of skin types too.

How Skin Whitening Creams Work

Skin whitening creams are designed to inhibit the production of the pigment melanin which is produced by the “melanocytes” found within the basal layer of the skin (the lower layer of the epidermis). The amount of melanin present is due to genetics and exposure to the sun. This will determine how light or dark your skin is. The melanin pigment has an important role to play because it gives your skin protection from harmful UV rays, however, many people suffer from associated problems with their skin pigmentation. Typical skin issues include hyperpigmentation, facial sun spots, melasma, scarring and discolored skin patches.

The Dangers of Chemical Skin Whiteners

Hydroquinone and mercury are typically used in skin whitening creams as they can inhibit the production of melanin and cause the skin to become lighter. However both chemicals are now considered to be toxic to the human body and they have been banned in several countries.

According to Health.India.com

Hydroquinone is a severely toxic and very powerful chemical used in photo processing, the manufacture of rubber and it is an active agent in hair dyes. Prolonged use of Hydroquinone can thicken collagen fibres and damage the connective tissues, leaving the skin rough and blotchy looking.”

“Mercury is known to be poisonous to the human body and is carcinogenic (cancer-producing). It slowly accumulates in skin cells, changing the natural pigment and leaving behind the tell-tale signs of grey/ blue pigmentation. Used long term, mercury can damage vital organs and lead to liver and kidney failure and mercury poisoning.”

Applying these chemicals to the skin over the long term causes them to react with UV rays and “re-oxidise” which can lead to increased pigmentation and premature ageing.

Bearberry (Arctostaphulos uvaursi)Safer Alternatives for Skin Whitening Creams

Scientists have since found a number of natural plant-based skin whiteners that have been proven to effectively whiten the skin. They act in the same way as hydroquinine, but without the risk of serious side effects. Some examples are:

Arbutin: is found in bearberry extract which comes from the leaves of the bearberry plant, not the fruit. Arbutin is a natural skin lightener that inhibits the action of the enzyme, tyrosinase, which is responsible for the formation of melanin in the skin. It is also packed with antioxidants and is considered to be a safe ingredient for external use.

Kojic Acid has been used in Japan as a skin lightener since the 1990’s. The extract comes from a type of fungi (mushroom) and can be used for treating melasma (dark pigmentation) and for bleaching freckles and age spots. It can be included in the diet too.

Liquorice extract has been shown to prevent UVB-induced pigmentation and to inhibit tyrosinase activity. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that protect and soothe the skin.

Giga White is formulated from seven Alpine plant extracts, including the Mallow plant, Peppermint and Primula Veris. It has been shown to effectively whiten, fade and remove dark spots and to improve uneven skin tone.

Vitamin C has unique collagen forming properties and acts to protect our skin cells from free radicals. This makes it an effective ingredient for preventing the skin from aging. Vitamin C has been scientifically proven to boost gluthathione levels in the blood which helps to lighten skin color.

Vitamin A has the ability to repair uneven skin tones and is often found in creams designed to treat skin complications such as hyperpigmentation, melasma and vitiligo.

Skin Whitening CreamsChoosing a Skin Whitening Cream

When choosing a whitening cream you should also consider your individual skin type and the color of your skin. The best skin whitening creams will contain a mixture of active ingredients designed to balance your skin tone while reducing the appearance of dark pigmentation and other skin blemishes.

Make sure the whitening cream that you choose has been manufactured by a reputable company. Read reviews about the product and gather information on the ingredients used and their benefits. Find out if there are any side effects.

Look for a whitening cream that contains a blend of natural lighteners as well as ingredients that will care for your skin. A good whitening cream should help to nourish your skin and give strong anti-oxidant protection against UV rays.

There are a number of natural whitening creams available, such as Meladerm, that have stood the test of time and have been proven to get good results.

Skin Whitening Cream Side Effects

Natural skin whitening creams are generally safe for all skin types but if you have very sensitive skin it is advisable to test a small amount of the cream on your arm or neck before applying it to the face.  Natural whiteners can be used for all skin colors with very few people reporting complications.

If you are buying a skin whitening cream online, make sure the product has a “money back guarantee” in case you find it is not suitable for your skin and want to return it.
